I wanted to buy a carton of noodles on one of my shopping trips, and I said “please give me a carton of Indomie”, the shop keeper’s response was “which one?”, and then she proceeded to name different brands. Truth is she’s not alone, there are brands that come to mind the minute a product type is mentioned, they have dominated the market so much that we call the product type by their brand name. The reason for this is simple; branding.
Brands, Branding, and ‘Barandest’…
A brand is a type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name, so when you hear Close up, you think of toothpaste because a kind of toothpaste is produced under the name Close up, and they have done an excellent job of making you remember them.
Branding is the process of creating a strong, positive perception of a company, its products or services in the customer’s mind, by combining elements such as logo, design, mission statement, and a consistent theme throughout all marketing communications.
Simply put, your brand is your promise to your customer, it tells them what they can expect from your products and services, and it differentiates your offering from that of your competitors. Would you like us to do some comparisons? Nah, we won’t take the bait.
Barandest (from the Yoruba word ‘Baranda’) is our coined name for dubious brands that either mimic a reputable brand in brand name spelling or pronunciation. In other words, subtle identity theft, forgive the sternness. Relax, we know that’s not you, and that’s why we’re having this conversation. Truth is a lack of direction in brand ideas and branding is what leads to ‘Barandest’.
Let’s share a popular Nigerian pidgin cliche with you – “ wetin you no go like when you rich, na for when you dey poor you go reject am”. In this context, it basically means that you start branding as an unknown startup before you even become the global brand you have imagined. Branding is a vital cog in the machine called business creation and sustainability. Through branding, you can build your customer loyalty, being top-of-mind for your target audience, and of course sales.
With these few points of ours, we hope you can see why branding is super important to the growth of your product/brand.
